After winning his second major of the year and third title in three tournaments last night, Rory McIlroy now finds himself as close to a nailed on certainty as you can get to be the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year for 2014.
McIlroy was outstanding in winning the US PGA over the weekend, in what for me, was his best major victory to date. All his other major victories have basically been walkovers, he led from early on, and never looked like getting caught.
Last night was different though, as McIlroy found himself put under immense pressure from 3 of the best golfers in the world. Phil Mickelson, Ricky Fowler and Henrik Stenson all led McIlroy at the turn, and he came back from behind to beat them all – and in doing so, proved he can win in differing circumstances.
McIlroy is now as short as 1/10 with Paddy Power. The best current price available on him is 1/5, you can get that with Ladbrokes, Coral and Betfair. I would move quick if you want to get it though, as I can only see that shortening.
The Ryder Cup is coming up soon, and with it being another high profile event, McIlroy will only shorten if he plays any minor role in a European victory.
McIlroy’s closest rival in the betting is Lewis Hamilton at a best price of 5/1 with Betvictor, but those odds must be based on Hamilton winning the Formula 1 Driver’s World Championship, and as things stand, that is anything but certain to happen.
And with there being little more major high profile sporting activity to come this year, it’s hard to see anyone coming out the pack and challenging McIlroy.
