Champions League Last 16 Fixtures – 1st Legs
Wednesday nights matches sees mouth watering ties for the two English clubs. Claudio Ranieri takes his Juventus side back to his old club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the third Serie A V Premier League clash of the week, Ranieri’s team currently lie second nine points behind Inter Milan and their form has been patchy at best lately only winning two of their last five – and one of them was with a last minute winner. Chelsea haven’t been brilliant either but have the ‘new manager effect’ at the moment, they looked like a rejuvenated team last saturday with Gus Hiddink in charge for the first time and i’m sure that the players will want to continue in that manner. Even with their dodgy home form Chelsea look a good price at 5/6 with Blue Square, Ricardo Carvalho returns to the squad but Deco is missing through injury.
Liverpool look to have a far harder task away at Real Madrid. Madrid have been a different team since the arrival of Juande Ramos pre Christmas winning their last nine La Liga matches – putting six past Real Betis last saturday before half time. Compare that to the recent form of Liverpool and it looks like a ‘no contest’, but Liverpool as we have come to learn are a different animal when it comes to the Champions League and are not to be taken lightly. Liverpool welcome back Xabi Alonso from suspension and have included Steven Gerrard in the squad but he is by no means certain to play, Madrid though will lose Klaas Jan Huntelaar who is ineligible to play as Madrid were only allowed to register one of their winter transfer window signings and opted for Lassana Diarra instead.
