The Cheltenham Gold Cup is always held on the Friday (last day) of the Cheltenham Festival, the day is also known as Gold Cup Day. Not only is the Gold Cup the Friday show piece race, it is also the whole show piece of the whole Festival.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the main event of the whole Festival, and is one of the 4 Festival Championship races. The other three Championship races are the Champion Hurdle always ran on a Tuesday, Champion Day, the Queen Mother Chase held every year on the Wednesday Ladies Day, and the Stayers’ Hurdle which is the Thursday main attraction on the day known as St Patrick’s Thursday.

The race this year is taking place at 3.30pm on Friday 17th March, 2017, and is sponsored by Timico. The official title of the race is The Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup Steeple Chase. The three main favourites for the race – after the withdrawal of Thistlecrack due to injury, are Native River, Cue Card, and Djakadam, all at around 7/2 to 4/1.
