Anybody who watched the recent Grand Slam of Darts back in November might remember youngster Keegan Brown coming of age, and reaching the last eight – his best ever performance in a PDC event. His showing in this tournament makes him a dangerous outsider in the Darts World Championship betting.
Brown opens up the tournament this Thursday (live on Sky Sports) when he takes on twice PDC World Champion John Part, and he is already heavy odds on favourite with the bookies to put the Canadian out on day one.
Back at the Grand Slam of darts, Brown beat Adrian Lewis in the group stages, but his best performance of all was his last 16 victory over another former World Champion, Raymond van Barneveld.
In beating van Barneveld, Brown really came of age. He absolutely dismantled Barney, and had it not been for a few nerves at the finish line, he would have secured a far more comfortable victory margin than the 10-7 he finally won by (he did lead 9-3).
It was the manner of the Barney victory that was so impressive though, Keegan Brown really looked the part. If you had just started watching darts and knew nothing about the players, you would have thought Brown was the more experienced player.
Inexperience eventually told for Keegan Brown at the Grand Slam though. He was in a similar position in the last eight against Dave Chisnall, leading 8-2 and 12-6, before eventually going down 16-14. It was a match Brown should have won, and it was the sort of match that I am in no doubt he will win more often than not in 12-18 months time.
During his run in the Grand Slam of darts, Brown showed his pedigree and that he belongs in this elite company.
