BBC Sports Personality of the year 2014 shortlist

The short list for the 2014 ‘BBC Sports Personality of the year’ award has been named, the ten contenders and the best odds on them to win the SPOTY award are as follows……..

Gareth Bale – Settled in to life at Real Madrid seamlessly, and is now a permanent cog in the well oiled Madrid machine. Bale scored the winner in the Spanish Cup final (Copa del Rey), and then scored the vital extra time goal in the Champions League final, that turned the match in Madrid’s favour and won them the cup.

Charlotte Dujardin – The 2014 Sky Sports/Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, Charlotte Dujardin has had a sensational year winning two Dressage gold medals at the World Equestrian Games, to go alongside her Olympic and European title.

Carl Froch – A surprising entry on to the 10 contender short list for me. Froch only fought once in 2014, beating George Groves convincingly in their rematch at Wembley on 31st May, with a stunning knock-out in the 8th round. In fairness to him, he is still a double world champion. If he wins this though, it will be more in the Ryan Giggs-like career acknowledgement envelope.

Kelly Gallagher & Charlotte Evans – Northern Irish skier Gallagher and her UK guide Evens became the first UK competitors to win a Winter Paralympics gold medal, when they skied to the visually impaired Super-G title in Sochi, at this year’s Winter Olympics.

Lewis Hamilton – Raced his way to his second Formula 1 World Drivers Championship title – winning eleven races on his way to the title, and also helping Mercedes to the Constructors Championship. Hamilton is second favourite, and has a chance with his world title coming more recently.

Rory McIlroy – A brilliant year for the Ulster man. World number one, two majors, and three points in a winning Ryder Cup. McIlroy enjoyed by far his best season to date, with his two majors coming back-to-back in what was a remarkable run of form for a couple of months at the back end of the UK summer. Should be a shoe-in for this title.

Jo Pavey – Just shy of 41 (at the time), Jo Pavey became the oldest ever female European champion when she won her first ever major Gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the European Championships in Zurich. What makes Pavey’s achievement all the more stunning, is that she had not long returned to the track after giving birth to her second child late in 2013. Definitely in with a chance of top 3.

Adam Peaty – Enjoyed a remarkable 2014, winning two golds at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and a further four winner’s medals at the European Championships, breaking the 50m breaststroke world record in the process. Probably not this year, but definitely one to watch for the future.

Max Whitlock – Seven Gymnastics medals for Whitlock this year, as he picked up a silver in the World Championships in China, a gold at the European Championships, and a further three golds, one silver and one bronze at the Commonwealth Games. A gruelling and highly successful year for Whitlock, but he not really a household name (yet, he is only 21), and is regarded as a major outsider to win.

Lizzy Yarnold – 2014 seen Yarnold win the Skeleton world cup and secure a gold in the Olympic games in Sochi, leading her four race event throughout. A winter Olympic gold for the UK is rare and carries a lot of prestige, but it still won’t be enough to win this title for Yarnold. I think she has an outside chance of a podium finish though.

A very strong line up of contenders this year, with several candidates having strong cases for the prestige of being named BBC Sports Personality of the year. The event take place in Glasgow this Sunday night (14th December).
