The route for the 2015 Tour de France was announced today (22/10/14), and the lack of time trials has already sent reverberations around the cycling world with Chris Froome hinting he might not even ride.
The 2013 Champions has suggested that he might be more suited to riding the Grand Tours in Italy and Spain instead, as with only one individual time trial included in the le tour itinerary, Froome knows he has lost one of his greatest advantages.
Froome was also well beaten by Alberto Contador in the mountains in the last Vuelta a España, a fact that won’t be lost on him. That said, I can’t see Dave Brailsford and Team Sky allowing their big name cyclist not to be on the start line of the biggest marketing and sponsorship event of the cycling calender.
In betting terms, Froome has now drifted out to a best price of 3/1 with Coral. The favourite is Spain’s Alberto Contador, who returned to top form in the 2014 season. Contador has seen his odds cut to 11/4 on the back of today’s announcement.
The big gamble today though was on Nairo Quintana, as his odds have been trimmed across the board. The seven mountain stages with five summit finises are right up the Columbian’s street, and he now finds himself as 3rd favourite at 100/30.
