Fresh from his outstanding Open Championship victory over the weekend, Rory McIlroy now finds himself as the new odds on favourite to be the ‘BBC Sports Personality Of The Year’ winner for 2014.
He has now gone odds on everywhere, with Ladbrokes at 5/6 (£50 Free Bet) the best price on him adding the prestigious award to his Open Championship. Some bookies have his as short as 4/6, so it might be worth getting the 5/6 while it’s still there.
This is also a Ryder Cup year, and the US PGA is still to come (which McIlroy won in 2012), so Rory has even more chances to further cement himself as the outstanding Sports person of 2014. It is an award that McIlroy was always probably destined to win at some point, so why not this year?
The fact that he recently chose to play for Ireland in the next Olympics doesn’t excluded him from the award, due to the fact that he comes from Northern Ireland, is a UK citizen and holds a British Passport.
McIlroy’s current closest rival is Lewis Hamilton, who has a chances of winning this year’s F1 World Championship, but I can’t see that trumping him. Hamilton is currently second favourite at 4/1, with Jonny Wilkinson at 10/1, and Carl Froch at 16/1.
